Immortal Rain: Yuca Profile
YUCA COLLABEL
Someday, I want you to forgive me for creating you.
HISTORY
The Methuselah with a soul that repeatedly reincarnates with memories of his previous lives.
Estimated IQ is at least 180. He is versed in biological science, medical science, and history, and understands dozens of languages.
Basically, he only has memories of being born as a human. It seems as though he has also been born as a woman(!).
Even though his physical appearance inherits his parents' racial characteristics, his previous life's face is strongly preserved.
Yuca can predict his own reincarnation day, but it isn't as if he can control the day he is born - while being repeatedly reborn many times, to reach the point where he can calculate the future day of his birth, things like the era and place of his birth, and circumstances, are completely out of his control.
From the time he's in his mother's body, he has awareness - to protect that consciousness and memory, while he's a fetus he quickly grows to adulthood.
Natural childbirth is rare, his mother's body has a proportionate physical and mental burden, and sometimes she dies.
Yuca in the part set in the past has a makeshift age of 19. After he is reborn, he has an outward age of 7-8.
His sense of reality is limited, it only ever feels like living in a daydream.
He has a habit of touching other people's faces to make sure of them. His five senses are slightly dull, and he has hardly any sense of taste.
Because of his neglect of his health and insomnia, his weak constitution gives him many short-lived existences.
He has very little vitality or fastidiousness, neglecting himself and beginning to live in a dump.
His mind and his face are very good, but in everything else he's a failure.
He rarely sleeps, but sometimes freezes.
MEMO
A character who doesn't put all his feelings into words.
Whenever my job is over, I always completely forget that I am a 'person who draws manga'. The world of my story, my interior, there aren't any stored away recollections beyond that tightly closed door. If I don't reset like that every time, it's tiresome to continue drawing again. But only Yuca, no matter what I'm doing at the time - when I'm watching TV and laughing, when I'm shopping at the supermarket, when I'm hanging out drunk - it feels like he's always sticking right by my side. Like a focus that doesn't disappear even when you avert your eyes. Like an abandoned child. So much that I want to cry, he's always, always with me.
The main point for Methuselah is the story of the conflict between 'a heart that wants to live' and 'a heart that wants to die'. Half of Methuselah was drawn for Rain and Machika, the other half was drawn to consign Yuca to oblivion. But if Rain is a person that came from outside of me, Yuca is my true child who was created from my flesh and blood.
When does a person become an existence called 'self'? Is the thing generally called 'self' separate from other outlines of the soul? For Yuca, the outline of this existence called self is worn out. Rain has a complex and a rival heart when it comes to Yuca, but it doesn't compare to Yuca's complex towards Rain. Yuca likes Rain so much that he wants to die, and hates Rain so much that he wants to kill. While drowning and choking on his extensive memories, by clinging to those feelings Yuca sustains his existence. Yuca is something I gave up on, and something I threw away, something I pretended to not see and wash away like sediment lying thick in a place, where instead of me those never part. Something that you're unable to forget, and something that you definitely can't give up on.
If I can continue drawing Methuselah until the end, if I can send him home, I think Yuca will disappear from my side.
There are many Yuca fans who are especially crazy about him, with those really at the last minute thoughts, it's like they want him to have happiness. The only character in the story whose birthday has been decided, celebrating his birthday for him every year are incredibly happy memories.
